Principal's Corner
  A Letter from our Principal . . .

Dear Parents, Guardians, and the South Holland community,

I would like to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year.  I am truly excited about what this year has in store for McKinley Elementary and Junior High. I know the teachers and all of the support staff are excited and ready to help our students become more successful in school and in life. In order to achieve this goal, we will need your support.

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Todd Whitaker and I am the new Principal here at McKinley Elementary and Junior High. I am a graduate of Western Michigan University where I played 5 years of football and earned my degree in Business Education and Physical Education. I received my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership and my Administrative certificate from Governors State University. For the past five years, I was the Principal of an alternative program that serviced the southern sixty-six school districts of Cook County. During my tenure there, my staff and I were able to make significant progress by helping students become stronger academically and by helping them reduce and/or eliminate the negative behaviors that were creating roadblocks to success. Also during my time, we only had one physical altercation. That is something that I am very proud of. We were able to achieve this by building strong relationships with our students and showing them there is a better, healthier way of dealing with conflict. We provided them with the necessary tools that will allow them to move forward in their academic careers and help them become outstanding young men and women.

Working together to achieve a common goal is critical. I will be working closely with all of the staff here at McKinley to make sure we provide our students with the best experience possible. We will make sure they are ready to compete academically at the next level. The foundation we help lay will be solid. However, none of this will be possible without the support from home and the community at large. I encourage you to make contact with your child’s teachers or myself to stay well informed of the progress being made. Teachers will use various methods of communication (PowerSchool, email, phone calls, Parent Conferences, etc.) to keep you up to date as well. PowerSchool is just one great resource to facilitate this. I know we might not see eye to eye on every topic, but please keep the lines of communication open so we can work toward a positive solution.

Again, I am truly excited about this school year and being here at McKinley! I thank you for the warm welcome I have received thus far and ask that you support me and my team as we move forward this school year.

Sincerely,

Todd Whitaker
Principal

Junior National Young Leaders Conference
Congratulations to our very own  Xavier Hohenkirk ~ Grade 7 ~

He was nominated and accepted to participate in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference that was held from October 15th - 20th  in historic West Virginia and Washington D.C..

Xavier traveled to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia, which is located at the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Now a national park, this beautiful area was the site of abolitionist John Brown's daring, and ultimately unsuccessful, raid on a federal armory in 1859. Along with park rangers dressed in historically accurate clothing, Xavier engaged in a variety of simulations that mimicked life in the United States during the years leading up to the Civil War.

The scholars scrubbed laundry on a wash board, participated in military drills and also examined Brown's life story and discussed his leadership characteristics. Following that, the scholars studied the challenges Brown faced and then debated his actions.

Xavier also traveled to many other historical sites and parks, including Washington D.C., where he participated and learned about our countries history.
